LILLE, France. -- The final whistle rings out, LOSC Lille have done it. Shirtless Ultras embrace. They have just witnessed their club topple the juggernauts of Europe, Real Madrid, in a thrilling 1-0 victory.
Lille's historic win on Oct. 2 is just one of multiple impressive results for French Clubs in the UEFA Champions League this season, including AS Monaco's 2-1 win over Spanish giants Barcelona, Monaco's thrashing of Red Star Belgrade 5-1 and Stade Brests' 4-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg.
Just Minutes ago, Brest drew to Bayern Leverkusen 1-1, a more than satisfactory result over the German Champions.
As of 3 p.m. Monaco sits second, and Brest 3rd in UCL standings.
Ironically, the only French club not exceeding expectations in Europe is Paris Saint-Germain, who have suffered disappointing result after disappointing result.
PSG started their UCL campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Girona thanks to a 90th minute own-goal. They followed that win with an away loss, 2-0 to Arsenal, and yesterday they dropped points in a shocking 2-2 tie at home against PSV Eindhoven.
For a team with the Payroll of PSG, it would be shocking to see them depart early in the UCL, but recent history hints that they may be one of the first of their French colleagues to bite the dust this year.
